U.S. Population and Demography

In 1950, nine out of 10 U.S. people were white. Today, the ratio of whites to non-whites is 1.5 to 1.*

(*This 1950 figure is often questioned, as anecdotes state that in a segregated nation white Census takers were often afraid to enter non-white neighborhoods.)

Whites represent 69% of the U.S. population.

The U.S. Hispanic and African American populations are 35MM and 34MM, respectively.

There are 15MM gays and lesbians nationwide.

Women and People of Color

Women and people of color are 70% of new employees in the U.S.

African American buying power has doubled over the last decade.

57% of single women are homeowners, twice as many as men.

Women purchase and/or influence the purchase of 80% of all consumer goods, buy 65% of cars and own more than half of all stocks.

In 1999, minorities represented 6% of the corporate director population in U.S.

Women of color represent less than 1% of total corporate board seats.

133 of the Fortune 1000 have Hispanics serving on Board of Directors.

Asian women make most of all women groups, but still only 63 cents on the dollar. Asian women often work in more technical fields.

In 2002, 1/6 of Blacks (16%) obtained college degrees.

What is the most significant driver for ethnic purchasing on a retail basis? Brand loyalty, customer service, or respect.

Discrimination Laws

Fifteen U.S. states have laws making unequal pay for equal work a violation.

People with disabilities have highest level of unemployment @ 70%, the same level as in 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act became law.

Orthopedic is the leading disability (40% of total).

Eight years after ADA went into affect, disabled employees who filed suits were successful in less than 7% of cases decided by trial.

White males can claim discrimination under three protected classes: age (>40), religion and physical ability (ADA)

There are no Federal laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, although several states have such laws.

Men file 13% of all sexual harassment charges.

"Quota" was termed in the early 20th century to limit how many Jews would be admitted to top institutions of higher learning.

Sexual harassment claims increased increased from 6,000 in 1990 to 16,000 in 2000.

Age and disability discrimination account for the biggest increases in filings.

2% of discrimination filings in employment are from those arguing "reverse discrimination".

Third Party Discrimination refers to harassment directed toward another individual that you witness. Eg. if you are sitting in the lunchroom and hear a colleague harassing another, you can essentially argue third-party harassment if it offended you.


World and International Facts

2050 World population = 9.3BB (est.)

Projected median age in Europe for 2050 = 52.7 years. Why? Decreasing fertility rates and stricter immigration laws.

Projected median age in U.S. for 2050 = 36.2

Chinese last names are generally one syllable. Japanese last names are usually more. Chinese use characters, versus the alphabet. Each character is one syllable. Few Chinese last names exist today because many families were named after Chinese Emperors.

Chinese are largest U.S. Asian population.

Oriental is used to refer rugs, furniture, etc, not people.

Germans are consistently working less hours per year, while U.S. people are working more per year.

The nation with the oldest average age is Japan (40 years).

By 2025, there will be more Italians over age 50 than under.

China will be the most rapidly aging nation in the next 20 years, primarily due to their "one child" law.

Home health care aids are one of the fasting growing jobs.


The Market

Companies listed on the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" consistently outperform the S & P 500 stock price average.

U.S.-based companies lose over 1/2 of their customers every 5 years.

In the mid-1990's, 60% of all brands lost market share.

A new market opportunity would be to recognize the needs of the "Sandwich Generation" -- defined as households caring for both aging parents and children under 18.
